Hanukkah in America

As nights become longer and days become shorter the Jewish community across the USA starts preparation for celebrating Hanukkah, a festival rich in history, customs and happiness. Known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah highlights family meetings, exceptional foods and the lighting of the Menorah. The discussion offers a detailed insight into the celebration of Hanukkah in the United States, emphasizing the unique aspects that contribute to its status as a treasured festival.
Historical Significance
Hanukkah, also known as Chanukah, celebrates the rededicating of the Second Temple in Jerusalem throughout the Maccabean Revolt that was held against the Seleucid Empire dating back to the 2nd century BCE.  Following the tradition, after the recovery of the temple the Menorah, which was a candelabrum with seven branches was lit with a slight amount of oil that lasted for eight days(although it was sufficient for just one, it remained limited in capacity) and that was a miracle! This is the reason why Hanukkah is commemorated for 8 nights
Rituals and traditions
Lighting the menorah: The illumination of the menorah is the centre of attraction of the festival. It is a candelabrum with eight branches with an extra for the helper candle (Shamash). In addition to a new candle every night continuing from right to left, the Shamash deserves special significance in lighting up the new candle. Time and again families get together around the menorah reciting prayers as well as singing traditional songs thus creating a sincere and communal ambience.
Special Foods: Hanukkah is celebrated for its delectable cuisine, which is traditionally prepared in oil to honour the miracle of the oil. Among the essential dishes served during this festival are latkes, potato pancakes, and sufganiyot, which are jelly-filled doughnuts. These culinary delights are appreciated by both Jewish and non-Jewish Americans, frequently integrating into the wider culinary scene.
Special Games: The Dreidel, a spinning top with four sides is a famous Hanukkah game. Every side of the spinning top bears a note in Hebrew-nun, hein, gimel, and shin which signifies ‘Nes Gadol Haya Sham’ meaning a great miracle happened there. Families play dreidel and spend time together indulging in fun. Often the families are involved in mini treats plus coins as prizes.
Charity and Community: Hanukkah is again the time to get involved in the community and do charity. Many families use this festival as an opportunity to offer help to the needy thus replicating the values of gentleness and kind-heartedness essential for Jewish Knowledge.
The Significance of Hanukkah in the American Landscape.
In the USA Hanukkah's prominence has grown meaningfully over the years partially due to the diverse cultural landscape of the country. Major cities in the USA, like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, host menorah lighting publicly and hold events, which are a result of large crowds gathering. This ultimately showcases the vibrancy of Hanukkah and the impact of the Jewish community on the lives of the American people.
The celebration of Hanukkah in the USA time and again includes local traditions plus innovations. For example in addition to traditional foods, you may get a Hanukkah-themed version of American Choices or fusion dishes that deserve special mention in blending of the Jewish with other gastronomic traditions. Workplaces or Schools may recognize Hanukkah with instructive programs or long weekend parties contributing to more awareness and presence.
